Self-Portrait as a Hummingbird

Jewels red

As Dorothy’s slippers

Surround my neck

An exotic choker

Given to me by my Spanish lover

After a night of sangria,

Flamenco and

Bilingual declarations of love

My body is luminescent green

Bright velvet

You yearn to touch

You want to feel its smooth texture

Yet before the impulse

Is fully formed

I am gone

I am busy you see

There are so many juicy flowers in this garden

I must taste them all

Purple ones on bended stem

Red ones flaming on the bush

Pink apple blossoms

Sweetest of them all

I pause to drink in the heavy scent of lavender

Indulge the yearning buds of the rosemary

The constant

motion of my wings is blinding

You cannot see

How exhausted I am

By this never-ending

Busyness

Only by chance

Will you catch

A glimpse of me

Still

Sitting above your head

on the wire

dreaming of Spain.
